Activation
Established as 310th Bombardment Wing, Medium
on March 15, 1952. Activated on March 28, 1952 at Smoky Hill AFB,
(later Schilling AFB), Kansas. Trained at Forbes AFB
B-29 Superfortress & KC-97 tankers
Received B29 bombardment training from 90th
Bombardment Wing, April - August 1952. From the following February
through May of 1953, it provided bombardment training to the 40th
bombardment Wing. Took on an aerial refueling mission when it
received KC-97 tankers in 1952.
B-47 Stratojets
Converted to B-47s in 1954. Deployed to Upper
Heyford RAF Station, England March 10 - June 8, 1955 and at RAF Greenham
Common, England Oct 3, 1956 - Jan 9, 1957.
Atlas Missiles
Gained a strategic missile squadron in
1961. First Atlas missiles went on alert in September 1962.
Redesignated the 310th Strategic Aerospace Wing on March 1, 1962.
Began phasing down for inactivation in early 1965.
Status
Discontinued and inactivated on June 25, 1965.
