706th SMW Hard Hat -
First and Only Atlas Wing
Fred Dye joined the
US Army during World War II and served throughout WWII, the Korean
War, and the early years of the Vietnam War. As a full-bird
Colonel he was stationed in the late 1950s with the 706th Strategic
Missile Wing located at Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in
Cheyenne, Wyoming, which is where he used this hat. The 706th was
activated on Feb. 13, 1958 and inactivated on July 1, 1961, so the
hat is from somewhere in those three years. Colonel Dye passed
away in the 1960s and the hat is from his estate. The above is
the only known insignia of the 706th. |
