Strategic Air Command
Many of SAC's bomb wings were active for 40 years or more.  During that time they flew several aircraft and one of the goals of our posters is to show the patch in use when then the wing was flying a particular airplane.  This has not been an easy task.  This chart reflects our current thinking on what patch was used with each aircraft.  Problem areas are indicated.
There are columns for the B-29/50, B-36, B-47 and B-52 eras, followed by one for "other aircraft" which includes the B-58, FB-111, B-1, and B-2.  A 6th column has been added for current Air Combat Command patches as they have caused a great deal of confusion.
The B-29/50 era has been especially difficult as it appears that few wing patches were in use during the time.  The SAC crest was approved in January 1952 and that seems to have motivated many of the wings to design new patches.  Prior to that, most may have used World War II group patches.  Unfortunately we have not been able to document this, as we have been unable to find most of the patches from that era.   The poster has to show something.  In a few cases, we've used the official description of the patch, .photos of World War II patches and later patches to "create" a patch to represent the wing at that time.  Hopefully such patches will not have to be used, but they may aid us finding the proper ones for the era.  Help would really be appreciated.
